Thanks for the articles, elray!! My favorites are the two about facebook and its huge sociological impact. I have a myspace as well as a facebook, and i post completely different things on the two, because my family is not involved in the former network. what Fred Vogelstein said about how facebook is setting the trend for social norms is absolutely correct. After facebook started the live activity stream, myspace jumped on the bandwagon, and maybe twitter came after? (I'm not sure, but it did in my mind, although i still do not have a twitter account.) And the analogy of facebook resembling thanksgiving all the time is spot on, i feel censored compared to the freedom of myspace. But if on facebook i can divide groups to whom i choose to post certain things to... that would be perfectly marvelous, and I might consider deleting the myspace page.
ReplyDeleteThe amazing thing though, was the article "Teenage insults, scrawled on web, not on walls." I cant even fathom having known so many negative things other people thought about me that young. They are going to be a vastly different generation...
FB has a "Friends Lists" function which allows you to separate your FB peeps into different categories. Then when you post to your wall you get to choose which lists get to see what you wrote. Kind of like having multiple personalities, but the appropriate ones are visible to the appropriate people and the inappropriate ones are automatically invisible.
ReplyDeleteI have not tried it out myself, and just present myself there on FB in a way that would not be offensive to anyone... sharing information and ideas that are practically harmless to the lowest common denominator.
